John F.Kennedy - 50th Anniversary
In memoriam 1917-1963

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Joseph and Rose Kennedy.

After serving in the US Navy, JFK began his political career in the US House of Representatives, representing the state of Massachusetts. After six successful years as a representative, JFK ran for the US Senate in 1952. During his time as an US Senator, JFK married his wife Jacqueline and played a vital role in passing the historic Civil Rights Act of 1957.

After his accomplishments in Congress, JKF set his sights on becoming President of the United States. JFK was successful, and on January 20, 1961, he was sworn in as the country’s 35th president at the age of 43, the youngest president ever to be elected. His Inaugural Address offered the memorable injunction: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” As President, he set out to redeem his campaign pledge to get America moving again.  His economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II; before his death, he laid plans for a massive assault on persisting pockets of privation and poverty. During JFK’s time as president the Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba and the Cuban Missile Crisis took place, marking significant historical events. Making great achievements in foreign policy, JFK made great advances during his presidency; a presidency which was cut short when he was assassinated.

On November 22, 1963, when he was hardly past his first thousand days in office, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was killed by an assassin’s bullets as his motorcade wound through Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was the youngest man elected President; he was the youngest to die. JFK will go down in history as one of the most beloved and internationally acclaimed presidents to have ever served. With the cordial bilateral relations that Papua New Guinea and United States continue to enjoy over the years, the Philatelic Bureau of Post PNG views it as an obligatory gesture to feature the Presidents 50th Inmemoriam as the 3rd release of its 2013 Postage Stamps issues.
