Below are frequently asked questions that customers often ask.
How do I
send mail?
In sending your mail, it is essential that certain postal
requirements be complied with. The mail that has an accurate Box
number and a proper address makes it easier and faster for us to
process it. Therefore, before sending your mail, check if your mail
has:
- The intended enclosure and is properly sealed.
- The complete name of the addressee.
- The correct P.O. Box number, Province town and city.
- If sending mail overseas, the country, street, zip code etc..
- Your return address.
- The correct postage. Example of a properly addressed and coded
mail. If your mail is already in its proper order, visit your
nearest Post Office and post your mail in the designated mailing
slots. Generally, most Post Offices have separate mailing slots
for Domestic and International Mail.
How does Post PNG deliver
my mail?
Our mission is to provide you with daily mail services and our
main responsibility is to deliver this service as efficiently as
possible.
The mail you send will undergo certain processes before
reaching the addressee. It is, therefore, quite important that you
know how your mail is delivered.
Mail posted in mailing slots in
Post Offices are collected as soon as they are posted.
Mail
collected are either sent direct or through our Distribution Centres
for sorting before they are sent to destination Post Offices for
delivery.
Those transported by ship from foreign countries are
processed and sorted out at our Mail Centres before they are sent to
destination Post Offices for delivery.
The Post Office in your area
will then distribute your mail to the address indicated on the mail
envelope through private box, lock mail bag or private mail bag
service depending on which bag or box you hold. For example, if the
addressee is a Box holder, the mail will be directly posted in the
designated Box located in the Post Office.
What are the mail
requirements within PNG?
Letter - is any envelope article of convenient shape or size.
Such articles are given first class treatment and are conveyed by
air or the quickest means. Maximum weight - 500 grams.
Packet - is
any article other than enveloped or convenient shape or size.
You
may choose surface (i.e. transmission by road or sea) or air charges
to suit your needs. Maximum weight - 500 grams.
Parcel- is any
package that weighs more then 500 grams and is to be sent by surface
or air conveyance transport. Maximum weight - 25kgs.
Freight - is any article that has weights exceeding 25kg.
Compensation - Postage charges do not include provision for
compensation against loss or damage. If compensation is required
please refer to our security mail services.
Size Limits - Surface Parcels and Air Parcels, 1 metre for any
one dimension; 2 metres for the sum of the length and the greatest
girth.
What are the international
mail requirements?
Letters and Postcards - any personal communication of convenient
size. Maximum weight 2kgs.
Small Packets - Any article containing
dutiable or non-dutiable goods. Maximum weight is 500 grams.
Printed
Papers and Books - Printed papers and small packets must be packed
so that they can be opened for postal inspection. The cover must be
endorsed "Printed Papers".
Maximum weight 5kgs.
International Parcel Post - Some countries do not permit
the enclosure of letters in parcels, The normal maximum weight limit
is 20kgs, but some countries have lower weight limits.
Check at your Post Office for restrictions on size, weight,
insurance and contents applicable to individual overseas countries.
Compensation is not normally covered under the ordinary
post, if required, see our Security Mail Services (e.g. Insured
Parcel Post)
What items are
prohibited from being
sent through
mail?
National and International Safety regulations mean there are
certain substances which must not be sent through the post.
Generally, these substances are explosives, flammable,
radio active or dangerous in some way. If in doubt please
ask at the Post Office near you.
The following items are prohibited from being sent through mail:
- Explosives - Ammunition, fireworks, blasting caps, igniters,
fuses, flares.
- Flammable Liquids - Gasoline, alcohol, paints thinners,
vanishes, flammable solvents, which ignite spontaneously in air.
- Flammable Solids - Matches, metallic magnesium, zinc powder,
cellulose nitrate film.
- Corrosives - Corrosive cleaning liquids, rust remover,
nitric acid, mercury, battery fluid.
- Poisons - Including drugs and medicines, except samples of
poisons and drugs, medicines in prescription quantities which
are packed and posted in prescribed manner.
- Radioactive Material
- Oxidising Material - Bleaching powders, disinfectants,
organic peroxides (hair or textile dyes), fibreglass repair
kits, substances which yield oxygen readily.
- Compressed Gas - Compressed Gas Flammable & non-Flammable
Aerosol products, butane lighters, fire extinguishers, cigarette
lighters, compressed or carbon dioxide gases.
- Materials which have anaesthetic, noxious, toxic or other
characteristics which cause extreme discomfort or annoyance if
leaked - mercury, batteries, quick time.
DANGEROUS GOODS MUST BE DECLARED AND UPLIFTED AS FREIGHT
Items which may be posted if packed correctly: Biological
specimens, bacteriological and pathological specimens, perishable
biological substances, liquids, bees, leeches, and harmless
entomological specimens, pastes, powders and substances in tablet
form, sharp-edged or pointed items.
