On June 15, 2007 the United Nations declared October 2 as the “International Day of Non-Violence”. Through education and public awareness, this day has been set aside to promote tolerance and understanding of non- violence in all nations around the world.
In observance of this historic day, Papua New Guinea has created a set of commemorative stamps featuring famous activists who were known for their promotion of tolerance and hatred of violence.
The new stamps include images of Mahatma Gandhi who promoted the ideas of peace, non- violence, and empowerment, Martin Luther King Jr. received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work in securing equal rights for African Americans in the United States.
Nelson Mandela was a prominent anti-apartheid activist in South Africa and helped spread the non- violence movement across the country. American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama; who shared the view of growth and change for the world through non-violent actions. Princess Diana the only woman to be included in this set for her work with numerous organizations helped inspire many to donate their time to help others promote peace and charity among all mankind.
This unique stamp issue is sure to be popular worldwide for it successfully promotes global ideas of peace and non-violence. |
