The following Philatelic Products are currently available from Papua
New Guinea Philatelic Bureau. Alongside each of the items are brief
notes for a layman to explain what the items are. Some major
Philatelic names and acronyms will be used after the explanations.
Mint Sets
These consist of one each of the values of a Stamp Issue in
un-postmarked condition.
Used or CTO Set
First of all the acronym CTO means "Cancelled To Order". It is a
proper philatelic term while "used" is more popularly used. Hence "CTO
Set" or "Used Set". This simply means a set of stamps of an Issue
which have been postmarked.
First Day Cover (FDC)
This is an envelope (sizes vary from Country to Country) which
has a special design on the left hand corner of the envelope
covering a space of about 70 t 80mm in from left. The design
compliments a particular stamp Issue, eg: Parrots. On the top right
hand corner each value of the Stamp Issue is affixed giving a space
of 1mm to 1.5mm between each of the stamps. These stamps are then
postmarked with an appropriate postmarker designed specifically for
the Stamp Issue with an Issue date on it.
Stamp Packs
Stamp Packs are sometimes called "Souvenir Folders" in other
countries.
This is a printed Pack with brief description of a Stamp Issue
and one each of the Stamps housed in Hawid Mounts. The pack has
multi-coloured design of the Stamp Issue subject at the front panel
so that it is consistent with the stamp set and First Day Cover.
Post Marker (Cachet)
This is a stamped impression of a Rubber Stamp with Pictorial
design of a subject that is on the Stamp Issue. An important aspect
of the Postmarker is that it has the Issue Date of the Stamp Issue
on it, so when it’s postmarked on the First Day Cover, the date is
imprinted on the cover. It is also known as CACHET.
Souvenir Sheet
This is usually to commemorate a special occasion or event, for
example, an International Stamp Exhibition, Olympic Games,
Commonwealth Games or Royal Anniversary etc.
This Souvenir Sheet is usually 105mm x 70mm as the accepted
overall size in Post PNG. Within the Souvenir Sheet is a Stamp with
Perforation around it. The design within the postage stamp area
would depict the occasion, event or subject of importance
commemorated. The overall Souvenir Sheet design would compliment the
Stamp design by extending the design from postage stamp area or
maintain distinct concept but on the same subject. The whole
Souvenir Sheet can be affixed to the First Day Cover and postmarked
with First Day of Issue Postmarker.
Miniature Sheet
A Miniature Sheet is sometimes interchanged by some Philatelists
and collectors with Souvenir Sheet. However, there is a slight
difference.
In Souvenir Sheet there is usually one postage stamp within the
Souvenir Sheet. However, in Miniature Sheet there are two up to five
postage stamps within a Miniature Sheet, i.e: once each of the value
in a Stamp Issue.
A Miniature Sheet can also be affixed to a First Day Cover
envelope and postmarked with First Day of Issue postmarker.
Imprint Block of Four
This is sometimes called "Corner Block of Four". Imprint Block of
Four is usually made up of 4 Stamps of same value from a Sheet kept
together with perforations. These 4 stamps are usually torn off from
any corners of full sheet together with the selvedge. The selvedge
has imprints of colours used, name of Printer and name of artist.
So to complete a set of Corner Blocks you would have 4 stamps
each of the values released in a Stamp Issue. Note, though, an Issue
which has only a Souvenir Sheet of Miniature Sheet cannot have an
Imprint Block of Four.
Special Postmark Cover
Special Postmark Cover is usually referred to as SPM Cover. Like
Souvenir Sheet SPM Cover is usually produced to commemorate an
event, Anniversary etc. The three most significant features in SPM
Cover are:
The envelope design or Design of the cover. This design is
specific to the subject that is commemorated.
The Postmarker with it’s pictorial and details of dates are
important.
The postage stamp and it’s value that is affix.
Pre-Stamped Envelope
Pre-Stamped Envelope is usually shortened to PSE. Basically it’s
a standard letter envelope with a specific design of a postage stamp
and required value (usually for domestic rate) pre printed or
imprinted onto the right hand corner of the envelope.
It usually serves the local or domestic requirements, however is
also collected as a Philatelic item due to regular change to designs
and face values.

Aerogramme
An Aerogramme is basically a sheet of paper, printed and trimmed
to serve as a writing paper (letter) and an envelope when folded.
Like PSE above, the postage stamp value is pre-printed. Like First
Day Cover (FDC) the front panel of the aerogramme usually has
colourful designs of Flora & Fauna or any other event that is
commemorated or subject that is national importance.

Stamp Album
A Stamp Album is usually a high finished properly bound book,
containing a set each, Souvenir Sheet, Miniature Sheet or Stamp
Issues released in a year. These products are once again kept safely
in Hawid Mounts and the mounts are affixed to the relevant album
pages.
First Flight Cover
This is a specific pictorial envelope affixed with an appropriate
postage stamp and postmarked with a pictorial First Flight Cachet
and carried on an Inaugural Flight. Eg: Air Niugini’s Flight to
Kansai (Osaka Japan) on 19th July 1997.
Se-Tenant Pair
A Se-tenant Pair or Strip is composed of two postage stamps with
a complete design or one whole design but separated by a perforation
in the middle and have separate face values or same face value. |
